3 Things

1. I bought (and ate) a Subway sandwich today. Not something I expected to do so soon after coming back from the US

2. Friends from my MIT house may find this especially interesting...

(It's a jewellery shop in London Victoria station)

3. Travelling by train is bloody tiring.

Can't think of title

I forgot how much I hated packing up.

I saw QoS

That boat was so fake.

22nd Oct

You know it's not your day when you pour half a box of cereal onto the floor first thing in the morning. I just did.

Pet Peeves

No.1: Drunkards

It's fine if you can handle the drink, but don't make yourself an arsehole. It's not funny and it's not clever.

Clock of Doom

Honestly, if they had £1m to spend on something like this, they should give it to us for the solar car or something.

The new Facebook is...

...weird. I don't like it.

Friday, 5 September 2008

I'm tired...

I feel sleepy, and my legs are shot. Erging 5km a day definitely wasn't a good idea.

London 2012

If there's one thing I'd like to see before the London Games, it would be the improvement of all the Tube trains, to make them wider and better ventilated. I felt like a sardine when riding on Victoria line this evening.

Last 12 hours in Beijing...

I should get some sleep.

Fri 15th Aug: Great skies. It feels like England.

Sat 16th Aug: Why does the air become great just as I'm about to leave?

Narrow victory/defeat

Today I saw a Chinese lady win a Judo final by a heitan (I think), whilst the Chinese sabre team lost its final to Ukraine by 44-45, both by the narrowest possible margins. I had zero clue about either sport, but they made for pretty entertaining viewing. I guess this is the magic of the Olympics.
Weds 13th Aug: Murky again. Why can't Beijing get more than 3 clear days in a row?
Thurs 14th Aug: Raining as I look out of the window. I may not miss Beijing by as much as I thought when I fly on Sunday.

My Olympics experience/gallery

Going to a Olympics event has whetted my appetite for taking up sports, and for sure I'll train a lot more on my rowing.

It was wet, but the venue was fantastic, and a great experience overall. I only wish I brought a pair of binoculars.

Getting a feel for the pre-competition atmosphere. This was taken a day before the opening ceremony.

As could be seen, security was tight...

Off to Shunyi Olympic park tomorrow!

Scene opposite the coach park, where I was waiting with friends to go to Shunyi.

Reports of missile batteries are justified it seems.

Just outside the front entrance, I saw this in one of the nearby bins. Well, I thought it was funny.

And here I am.

We sat next to this cheerleading group, which attracted as much, if not more attention than the rowers.

The action begins...

Cheering for the Chinese fours. 中国加油!

We sat about 300m from the finishing line.

The yellow thing I was sitting on was a rain-cloak handed out by volunteers, which proved to be very useful later on in the day.

The Chinese eights, whose warming-up run was wasted due to the rain.

Waiting for the announcement of the eights' heats, which were postponed in the end. Still, we managed to watch most of the races, so I was pretty satisfied.

Show's over guys, let's go home.

Queuing for the bus.

Sun 10th Aug: Rain, so no prospect of blue skies today either. At least the air smelled fresh.

Mon 11th Aug: Pretty good, I could see clouds' linings and everything. The sun made brief appearances too.

Tues 12th Aug: Brilliant day, probably the best I've had since coming back this summer. If only Beijing could remain like this for the rest of the month...

Saturday, 9 August 2008

I thought the opening ceremony was pretty good...

...but women's football is rubbish.

Fri 8th Aug: Foggy, although it wasn't suffocating or anything.

Sat 9th Aug: A bit better, but I guess the media will have more reasons to complain about the air pollution.

Sunday, 3 August 2008

Off to Shanghai tomorrow...

Will get back just before the opening ceremony on Friday, but that means I won't be doing the air-monitor for a while.

2nd-4th August: Belissimo, but bloody hot.

P.S. mosquitos should be made extinct.

Friday, 1 August 2008

One thing I hate about Chinese TV...

...are the same adverts that keep repeating right after itself. We don't NEED the same shampoo clip 3 times in a row!

1st August: Beautiful day, I could see clouds! Awfully hot though.

31st July: Not too bad compared to the start of the week, but a bit humid and stuffy. Nice and cool.

Night-time views

I didn't get too close, as there were more policemen around today for some reason. Possibly a dress rehearsal for the opening ceremony.

30th July: Not as good as yesterday, apparently precipication really helps keeping the dust/fog down.

Tuesday, 29 July 2008

Blue skies?

29th July: Very pleasant day indeed, no doubt aided by the morning shower. Everything smelled fresh and green.

Monday, 28 July 2008

Engrish

28th July: Visibility still not great, but at least it's cooled down a bit.

Sunday, 27 July 2008

First look at the Olympics site

Well, all the main arenas were fenced off, and will remain so until the opening ceremony. However I managed to take some photos of the surrounding areas this evening.

27th July: Arguably clearer air today than yesterday, but the humidity (and temperature) was still pretty high.

Saturday, 26 July 2008

I'm jetlagged

Whilst fighting off the tempation to fall face first onto the keyboard, I would like to announce that I'll be doing a daily monitor of air quality over Beijing for the next 3 weeks. If you've been following the BBC China blog (yeah right) you'll know what I mean.

26th July: Pretty murky out here, breathing was quite a bit more difficult than when I was in London yesterday. Don't have a photo, since it's 10pm right now.

Thursday, 24 July 2008

Off to BJ tomorrow

Hmm, shorts and sunglasses might come in handy.

Saturday, 19 July 2008

Oxford Circus at 3pm

Chant:

Hare Krishna

...and be happy.

Confused

Preparing my documents for visa application, I came across this:

Does this mean that if I'm born in China, I wouldn't need an invitation letter? Would I have to stay at a hotel? Eh?

Friday, 11 July 2008

Friday

It's 15:27, can't wait to finish for the day. Noise from the construction works next door is driving me bonkers.

Thurs 10th July: Erged 30mins @ 22spm - 7307m (2'03/500m split). Well, it could have been worse.

Pensive

First thoughts of the new Firefox 3: seems awfully similar to 2, but what's with the new 'recently viewed' drop-down menu? It takes up half the bloody screen!

Having told myself to train hard for the rowing season next term, I'm finally getting around to doing some erging today. Not really looking forward to it to be honest...

Listening to Clips of the Week on talksport.net

I am writing this on a HP iPaq 214 PDA worth 250 quid, donated for the solar car team. It was given to me for the vacation as we don't have a use for it. I don't either.

In other news: hooray for Spain! Arshavin you're having a laugh!

Typing on this thing is a pain in the ****
